Photography always was a great font of inspiration for me. Today I am in Rozzano (Milano) with Valentina and Luca in their studio Piccoli Ricordi Photography. They use my creations for many of their photo sessions and some of them you will see in this post.
Please tell me a bit about you and your studio.
Piccoli Ricordi Photography is not only a photo studio but it is a real mission. Since we became parents tell “family stories” is our goal and our greatest passion.
Since when you have your own studio? How did you choose this space?
We do not have an actual real studio: we prefer to work at home and / or outside, to make the most of the emotions and feelings that only the home and / or a dear place can arise.
However we have a small studio inside of our house where we receive customers and where we have optimized spaces for the Cake Smash sessions and Newborn sessions.
How did you divided the space? Is there a waiting room, a small office, etc.? What advice can you give to organize better space in the studio?
Basically the space is divided into two rooms: a larger room where we prepare the set for the session and a smaller room where we receive customers. In this second room we created area for our smallest models with changing table and all necessary. Of course there is also a bathroom, especially crucial for the Cake Smash services! 🙂
However, small or large, we believe it is very important that the space is well divided and has very welcoming atmosphere.
What kind of lighting you prefer to use (natural, artificial or both)? What kind of advice can you give to create a good lighting?
Well, if we are shooting in our customers home, if possible, we prefer to use natural light. Should it not be possible we assemble our flash lamps.
We think that the lighting is a very subjective thing and also creative … as a basic rule we do recommend to “mix” the lights to avoid unpleasant strange coloring effects.
What are your favorite accessories? In your opinion what are the main accessories for a studio that is dedicated to family photography?
There are many essential things, in our studio we can not miss: bean bag, pads, reflectors, tripods, backdrop stands, backdrops, clamp, props and accessories for babies.
How do you organize props? How do you prepare the accessories for a session?
Usually the night before the photo shoot we think of the possible set and, if we go to customers home, we prepare everything necessary for the “half studio moving” the day after 😉 … otherwise we set up the set directly in our studio and we keep other accessories ready in case we decide to create other sets.
What do you recommend to those who are looking for a space to open their own photo studio?
